A Bit About Us
Ostriland Import Export (Pty) Ltd was founded by Hennie van Zyl, an orange farmer who had an idea to go into the ostrich farming business and soon realised that a tannery will be necessary to optimize the yield of an ostrich and in 1996 he started the tannery in Citrusdal in the Western Cape, South Africa, about 1.5 hours’ drive away from Cape Town. We started in a small garage building of about 25m2 with one dying drum that can load 20 ostrich skins. From small beginnings and driving across country to sell 10 skins here and 10 skins there, things grew year by year. Today we have a fully functional state of the art tannery of 2000m2.
Dedication & Hard Work
Today we are still a Family owned business and believe that through hard work, dedication, and quality control, we can deliver the world’s best leather. We have a team of 30 skilled people working in the tannery and we are one big family. We also have some of the best technicians in the tannery industry. The tannery is very environment friendly with a fully operational effluent plant.
Quality Is Key
We have our own birds, so we can monitor the quality as well as the size of the skins we produce. Quality is never an accident, it is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, intelligent direction and skillful execution, we never sacrifice quality. Our production per season at the moment is approximately 20,000 birds.
